Transitioning Into Fall
The final days of summer are here.
This time of year always makes me a little melancholy. Days are getting noticeably shorter. The grass is getting tougher and throwing up seed heads. The kids are back in school (at least here in the south they are).
The year goes by so fast now-like the world is on adrenaline.
I want to slow down and take a nap.
I’d like to cut the grass a few more times before it’s finished growing for the year.
I’d like to go to sleep and wake up to the leaves changing colors and a slower pace. And then, I’d love it if Thanksgiving would take its time getting here.
When I was a child, the summer lasted so long that by the time it was almost over, I couldn’t wait for school to start again.
Now, it’s just a blip on the radar. Then poof, it’s gone.
One of my favorite signs that fall is approaching is spotting a yellow garden spider’s web in the eaves of the house or the shop. They are basically harmless spiders and their webs are so elegant. They’re the ones with the zigzag down the middle.
With fall coming on, it seems like there is so much to do.
Finishing up the outside chores, getting wood in for the winter, any painting that needs to be done–zigzags of my own to complete.
We, Michael and I, sit out under the carport in the evenings enjoying the cooler evening temperatures and the last of the daylight while the days are still reasonably long.
I feel like I’m at this point in my life, too. Transitioning into fall.
I’m not ready to roll over and die, but it’s coming up on the time to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Spectacular changes are coming. I can feel it in the air.

I know exactly how you feel. Leaves are already falling some and you can just feel time going by especially at my age. I’ve been putting up okra and still getting very few small tomatoes, have to do up a few at a time and put in ref. until I get more. I miss seeing you. I’m ready for some good cake. I have you 2 small and 1 large squash casserole in the freezer. Thank you so much for being my friend.
Having you for a friend has been my pleasure. I do feel a cake coming on…and it needs to be soon. I’d love to visit while your flowers are still blooming. We have lots to talk about…missing you! And your squash casseroles are soooo good, I thank you in advance!
As I read your words, I can feel what they’re saying. I’ve been here caring for my sister-in-law for 2 months now. It seems I missed the whole summer. And as much as I missed the summer, I am also anxious for the crisp days and cool nights of fall. It will soon be time for bon-fires.
Maybe next time you come up we can light one of the brush piles on fire!
Carol,
You said it all! I have had these same thoughts the last few weeks. The leaves are already starting to fall to the ground and I am mowing grass a little less. I actually love to mow grass and weed eat. For me, even though hot as blazes in the summer time, isn’t the yard gorgeous freshly mowed and trimmed and cleaned up. But then when the leaves start to turn that beautiful red, yellow, golden, brown, rust colors and fall to the ground I appreciate that beauty also. I too understand the meaning of slowing down and realizing I am getting older. My sister is 10 years older than myself and I made a funny comment to her yesterday that I would always be 10 years younger which we have always laughed about for years. For the first time, she shot back and said true, but you are not a spring chicken anymore. I laughed and said true. So like Fall and slowing down from summer chores, I find myself slowing down in a good way to rest up again during the fall and winter only to get going again in the Spring and Summer. But I do love Fall and the somewhat cooler evenings and mornings. It is also for me a great time of reflection, thanking God daily for his many blessings and to watch his beauty on display as the leaves begin to turn those magnificent colors. Happy almost Fall Carol Horton.
Love, Susan
And a Happy Almost Fall to you too! I just finished cutting grass, (and yes, I enjoy it too!) but we haven’t weed-eated at all this year. We have, however, spent a lot of time limbing up trees that smack us in the face while we’re mowing.
Your sister was right, we’re not spring chickens anymore and I love it! I don’t mind getting older, in fact I enjoy it except for the extra aches and pains. 🙂
Love you girl!
